Papers, fan recipe for fire at Robbinsville pharmacy
13-Jan-2008: A malfunctioning exhaust fan may have caused side effects of smoke and fire in a township pharmacy yesterday afternoon, fire officials say.
Emergency services were called just after 5 p.m. Sunday to respond to a fire at the rear of Rite Aid on Washington Boulevard. Fire units arriving on the scene found smoke streaming from the back door.
Upon entering the store, firefighters traced the fire to a small crawl space above the bathroom being used for storage. A blaze fueled by papers up there was quickly brought under control, and nearby boxes were dampened to keep the small fire from spreading.
As the store was in the process of closing when the fire took place, it was not crowded. Fire officials said patrons and staff had all been evacuated by the time units arrived.
The store was ventilated to clear out any smoke, and the building inspector, fire inspector, and local health department were called to the scene. An investigation has begun, but fire officials say they believe the cause to be an exhaust fan in the bathroom that failed.
