Pharmacy Board Discloses Plans of Operations in Sierra Leone
17-Jan-2008: The Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, as a regulatory body of all pharmaceutical activities in the country, is committed to fostering a collaborative relationship built on trust and mutual respect with members of the Medical and Dental Association.
In his statement at the scientific conference and symposium organized by the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association held at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi Building, at Brookfields Freetown on Monday 14th January 2008, the Registrar of the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, Michael Jack Lansana said the Board continues to employ pre and post marketing evaluation strategies in the conduct of its regulatory responsibilities, using basic mechanisms including inspection of the distribution channels, the manufacturing sites and by also product registrations and licensing of professionals and pharmacists.
He stated that quality control laboratory analysis, drug information and safety monitoring are also part of the four basic Mechanisms guiding such operations.
The Registrar informed his audience that routine inspection exercises are conducted nation wide on a regular basis, in order to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Pharmacy Board and the Drug Act of 2007.
He intimated that the Board puts more emphasis on the identification of counterfeit, sub-standard and illegally imported products and supervises their consequent withdrawal from circulation.
He revealed that from January to July 2007, the Pharmacy Board destroyed over four billion Leones (Le 4,000,000,000) worth of counterfeit, sub-standard and illegally imported drugs, adding that a national pharmaceutical quality control laboratory has been set up and it is one of the most equipped laboratory in the sub-region, with highly sophisticated and state of the Art equipments.
