Pharmacy green light delight
18-May-2008: HEALTH centre campaigners have welcomed the green light for a new pharmacy in Scholar Green.
Cornwells Chemists has won approval from the area's primary care trust to open a pharmacy in the village.
Cornwells said it was delighted to be granted the pharmacy contract, and was committed to opening a pharmacy in Scholar Green.
advertisementThe news was welcomed by Scholar Green Greenfields Association, which is backing plans for a health centre for the village and a pharmacy on the former Scholar Green garage site.
Les Woollam from the association said a planning application for the centre and pharmacy submitted by the site owner was due to be discussed by Congleton Borough Council in the next few weeks.
"The association is delighted with the approval of the pharmacy," said Mr Woollam.
"It is a significant development which forms an integral part of the association's plans to deliver a no-compromise healthcare facility to the village and surrounding area.
"More than 600 residents signed a petition requesting the pharmacy, and this result is testament to the much-publicised drive for a patient-led NHS.
"We believe the association's proposal has been vindicated by the primary care trust's decision in approving the pharmacy."
Borough councillors threw out health centre plans for land off Portland Drive, Scholar Green, in January.
The plans included 56 houses, and had been opposed by the association, which said it recognised the need for improved medical facilities in Scholar Green but not at the expense of more housing.
