German Cartel Office investigates boycott of Celesio after DocMorris takeover

19-Jul-2007: BONN (Thomson Financial) - Germany's Cartel Office is investigating whether regional pharmacists' associations have asked pharmacies to boycott Celesio AG's wholesale merchant Gehe, a spokesman said confirming media reports.

The spokesman said the alleged boycott is linked to Celesio's recent acquisition of Dutch online pharmacy operator DocMorris.

He said offices of the regional pharmacists' associations in the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thuringia were searched yesterday and documents were confiscated.

DocMorris last year opened a pharmacy in the state of Saarland, sparking a debate over whether Germany should liberalize its pharmacy market. Pharmacists' associations are opposed to such a step.

Under German law, pharmacies can currently only be operated by licensed pharmacists, each of whom can run no more than four outlets.
