Prescription worry for elderly in pharmacy row

25-Feb-2008: VULNERABLE people may be given transport to another pharmacy if their local chemist refuses to dispense medicine this Saturday, under Health Service Executive (HSE) contingency plans.

The move comes amid fears that elderly people, in particular, will be left without medicines if their regular pharmacist refuses under State schemes, in the bitter row over a reduction in fees.

Health officials were adamant yesterday the controversial plan to reduce the wholesale mark-up on the price of drugs from next Saturday will go ahead.
The public should check with their pharmacist to find out if they will fill their prescriptions from Saturday.

If a pharmacist refuses to supply the medicines under the schemes they should ask for it to be returned. The advice is to call the HSE info-line, 1850 24 1850, and they will be given details of other operating pharmacists.
